Shropshire Mines
Design interpretation and art working expertise for interpretational panels and signage for Shropshire historic mines
Working with the Shropshire Hill Landscape Partnership Scheme we created a suite of interpretation panels across three historic mining sites.
Content and text were developed from research supplied by the client team, including a wealth of assets provided by volunteers such as archive photography, maps and illustrations. Additional illustrations created by Leach complemented the information, providing a thorough insight into each location.
The sites at Tankerville Mine and Snailbeach offer information about the hive of activity that could once be seen in the now disused and ruined buildings. At the site in Cothercott, the panels provide insight into what can no longer be seen in the landscape. Using the only clues left of the Barytes Mill that once stood here, some of the panels are designed as etched, stainless steel arcs, mounted to millstones left littered in the landscape, evoking the industrial nature of the site.
The graphic style of the panels varied between the sites, designed to complement the surrounding landscape and enhance the specific assets utilised such as a reconstruction CGI model of the mine at Tankerville, provided by a local volunteer.
